SigEx Telecom : PS3 back in business thanks to Rockstar
by Ana Maria Ciobanu

Ever since the Wii has taken over the top sales position, more Wii exclusive games are being created than for any other console. The same thing happened to the Xbox 360 once. According to a report released earlier this month by Gaming Target, the Wii has 113 exclusive games. Sony's PlayStation 3 had only 47 till yesterday. They probably thought: "Things have gone to far!Something must be done to defeat the Nintendo beast!" Sony signed a deal with Rockstar(the company behind the blockbuster hit Grand Theft Auto)that made all the remaining fans of PS3 very happy. They all thought it was about time someone made a move like this one. Sony thinks their friendship with Rockstar will show the world PS3's uniqueness because Rockstar wants to create a game only for PS3, promoting the importancy of Cell and Blu-ray disc. The PS3 fans are very excited and can't wait for the new game. You can read 290 positive opiniions about this deal on the PlayStation blog at: http://blog.us.playstation.com Everybody loved the GTA series. I loved it to. I was a huge fan of GTA Vice City and of Bully but I can't imagine what game they'll launch now and if it will be good enough to put the PS3 back in business. This is a very intelligent deal and maybe the only way PS3 will draw the attention again. They've still got many to say, even though voices say they're finished.

SigEx Telecom:Microsoft Authorizes Cutting-Edge Wi-Fi
by Ioana Madalina Tantareanu

Microsoft is now offering intellectual property (IP) licenses to entrepreneurial-spirited companies capable of deploying them as viable products or services for the billion-dollar-plus Wi-Fi marketplace, in order to spur commercial development of two mature Wi-Fi technologies invented by its Networking Research Group.Louis Carbonneau, General Manager for the IP Licensing Group at Microsoft sad that "Intellectual property generated by Microsoft can turn into opportunities for others. Our research labs generate more IP than our product groups can absorb." He added that "Right now, our goal is to see our new Wi-Fi technologies around RTLS and hot spots deployed as great new products or services for businesses or consumers. Companies that license our IP have fabulous new opportunities to gain access to best of breed IP and the cachet of deploying technologies coming out of our renowned Microsoft Research Labs. We can help companies enter new markets or expand current lines of business." As they both sit squarely in two very fast-growth markets, the two Wi-Fi technologies, RADAR and CHOICE,have enormous commercial potential.First, RADAR,can be deployed to guide people through large buildings, to keep track of unauthorized individuals within a high-security environment, and to locate equipment within large premises. It is an indoor real-time location system (RTLS) that's optimized for Wi-Fi but can be used in any wireless network. The secind one,CHOICE can be leveraged by the licensee to deploy a new wireless "hot spot" service or to augment an existing Wi-Fi deployment and it represents a Wi-Fi network system that is also available for Microsoft IP licensing.

SigEx Ventures :University of Florida incubation
by Ioana Madalina Tantareanu

The University of Florida's biotechnology incubator, tucked in the backwoods of Alachua,is emerging as a sleeping giant, challenging the might of Goliaths such as MIT, Stanford and Caltech. The new thing is that this year UF's Sid Martin Biotechnology Incubator claimed the second spot in the technology category of the National Business Incubation Association's annual Incubator of the Year award program and also captured a glowing write up in Business Week magazine. Related to this subject, experts say that the incubator's biotech focus helped it stay on course and succeed in an area that's considered hot and trendy. David Day, UF director of technology licensing said that "It's one of those 11-year overnight success stories." George Gordon, a director of the Tampa Bay Technology Forum, said that "When you are number one, it's hard to say that you are not a role model,"refering to the fact that it jumped ahead of its peers at USF by attracting more capital, infusing a corporate atmosphere and installing a team of passionate managers. The cutting edge equipment, a climate-controlled greenhouse, an attached animal facility and a pilot fermentation facility also sets the incubator apart from its peers is its million-dollar facility, said incubator manager,Patti Breedlove.Officials there focus on snapping the umbilical cord between the scientists and the companies that emerge. They emphasize water-tight business plans, and encourage bringing in seasoned professionals to run the companies.

SigEx Ventures :ST, Bosch sign licensing agreement
by Ioana Madalina Tantareanu

Long-time partners, Bosch Group and STMicroelectronics NV announced a licensing agreement by which Bosch will use ST's smart power and high-voltage technologies to design and manufacture highly integrated automotive products. Under the terms of the agreement, Bosch said it would license ST's BCD8 (Bipolar-CMOS-DMOS) smart power technology that is claimed to allow analog, digital and power circuits to be integrated on a single chip. It is based on a 0.18-micron technology. Bosch will also license ST's BCD8 design rules, enabling the company's in-house design teams to develop products autonomously, for production in the wafer fab. Bosch indicated that it would use ST's technology across the whole range of engine management, transmission control, occupant protection, chassis system and other applications. The HVCMOS8 high-voltage CMOS technology that Bosch is also licensing from ST is generally used in applications such as sensor interfaces and analog processing. The Geneva-based company further explained that despite the smaller lithography, the power capability remains the same as in BCD6 and the established benefits of the technology (high-voltage capability, protection against hostile environmental events, wide temperature range and automotive-grade reliability) are maintained.

Lets get down to business
by Claudia Sonea

Being one of the best universities in the world, Harvard has to deal with different issues everyday and the latest one is that of the technology transfer operation. For the up-coming change of president at Harvard University a faculty committee, led by Laurie Glimcher, Harvard cancer biologist, studying the commercialization of research at the university has made a resume on the work over the past year. The main recommendation was to uniform the standards across disciplines in order to make commercialization of technologies more efficient by going beyond the biomedical field. Nowadays, Harvard lays its patents to inventions only in the medical area or to those to which they contributed with a large amount of money. There have been signs of change since 2005, when the former president, Lawrence Summers, hired Isaac Kohlberg, the highest paid university administrator in the USA, according to the headlines. At NYU Kohlberg had great achievements increasing technology licensing deals dramatically, but could he change Harvard situation too? His task is very hard indeed. Although in biotech research Harvard came on the first place, according to a study made in 2006, in technology transfer ranked 18th. Despite some changes like consolidating operations between Harvard Medical School and the so-called Faculty of Arts and Sciences, packing the newly named “Office of Technology Development” with Ph.Ds that can raise innovation potential, Kohlberg has not yet succeeded to make a difference. Licensing revenues are flat and the number of patents granted to Harvard faculty is slightly down since his arrival. My biggest question is when Kohlberg’s efforts will have an echo in real life. And also if the new president will have the same policy like the former or he will change. I think that if their main purpose is to improve technology transfers, they should hire people with experience in sales and negotiation and stop using the same model that worked for some, because what is good for them it is not necessary good for them too. They should try to get to the core of the problem and eliminate the evil from the roots. Surf on and find out what will spin next.
